Re: Use of Indicator for Overtaking

Given the potential for severe consequences if it goes wrong, erring on the side of caution - Vs a hurried mistake - has to be better IMO. sometimes I'm not as prepared as I should be I ought to have been more clear about this, thinking the short-hand would be understood; I wasn't paying as much at...

Re: Use of Indicator for Overtaking

I believe I communicated my clear intention to overtake with road position As do I. with one final confirmation of the when - the indicator being activated. I believe I communicated suitably and with courtesy to the van driver. Hmm, it would be interesting to be able to ask the generally disengaged...

Re: Use of Indicator for Overtaking

It is my belief that having transitioned to the offside, I am still ‘intending’ to overtake and accordingly my indicator should be activated signalling and telegraphing as such. Only until I am safely alongside or passed the vehicle, does the status of intention change to that of overtaking - in ot...

Re: Use of Indicator for Overtaking

In the context of single carriageway overtakes and where it's necessary to indicate at all, I view indicating as telling other road users of my intention to move out. Once I'm out, I've done which I'd intended and signalled. Moving out isn't ever a commitment to pass or, if it is, there's something ...

Re: Use of Indicator for Overtaking

in the book John Lyon advocates cancelling the (intention to overtake) indicator when overtaking on a multilane carriageway before the wheels cross the lane division line system. If the driver is holding roughly to the centre of their lane while indicating until it's clear other road users have und...

Re: Use of Indicator for Overtaking

Could you clarify that, please. Sure. I remember two cyclists, one further out than the other, with not enough view to safely pass as they climbed towards the crest on a left bend. As we approached the crest, before the view developed but where it would soon, I started indicating. As the view start...

Re: Use of Indicator for Overtaking

I thought to advocate procedurally cancelling the indicator at the aforementioned moment, is not encouraging the driver to use the indicator with intelligence and logic in any situation. I struggle with ' not encouraging the driver to use the indicator with intelligence and logic in any situation '...

Re: Use of Indicator for Overtaking

From this, I glean he does not believe there is any benefit of maintaining an activated indicator for the base of the ‘triangle’ manoeuvre when moving to, and whilst on the offside pausing to look down the ‘hypotenuse’. If other drivers or riders can't see your vehicle in the offside position, shou...

Re: Use of Indicator for Overtaking

From my point of view, the only time a signal might be necessary in the context of a single carriageway overtake is if a following vehicle is more eager than you to press on.

Re: Use of Indicator for Overtaking

It reads to me that if a signal is necessary, the indicator should flash for a minimum of four seconds and cancelled prior to moving to the offside. In what circumstances do you think a signal is necessary? If you think it is necessary, how long does it take another road user to see it, understand ...
