So much for the days when I used to have a senior member of the UK royal family, plus an important businessman in the back of my car; alone with no escort and nobody trailing us.
I wonder why it seems to have gone a bit OTT.
Really good or quite bad?

I'd argue that blood or an organ should be given the highest priority.

Yes - I thought they were called Diplomatic Protection Group - either they were or I imagined it....
I think they're the ones stood close to the VIP, looking twitchy behind their mirror shades, talking to their wrist, and trying not to reach under their left armpit if a member of the public waves.
Or have I watched too many American movies?
Your 'standard' is how you drive alone, not how you drive during a test.

For those who don't don't know, in the UK there are 36 'blood bike' volunteer groups. They also carry a range of other medical stuff, even breast milk.

FWIW, this video only came to be on tv for three reasons.
First was that a couple of Met coppers realised the potential for in-car video to be used for education rather than just prosecution. Ian Kerr won the Torrens Trophy for this and other work.
They were asked to have a stand at the Ally Pally bike show, with the videos showing. A tv producer saw that and thought it would make a good programme. Police Camera Action was born.
When the 'liver' job came up, someone decided to get the video car (very rare at that time) included.

Royal Protection for well, Royals
Close Protection for some Ministers .
DPG Protection for Government, Embassies, Scotland Yard etc
So an incident at say the Foreign Office is often first attended by the local police who provide a holding operation until an Inspector from the DPG arrives to take over the incident.
DPG Bikes, Cars and Vans are maroon in colour and it is an armed unit.
Once had an incident of an unauthorised parked car at the Attorney Generals Office which required me to seek their assistance. DPG turned up in 3 maroon vans with police armed to to teeth pouring out of them and surrounding the building. Quite dramatic.
Visit such as an American President involved having to co-ordinate with several specialist units including the FBI who always seemed to have their way of doing things and we had ours so it could get interesting.

FBI? I thought they were US domestic only. Are you perhaps referring to the Secret Service?

FBI was what they and the US Embassy called them.

This video explains the roles of the two riders:
1st Courier
2nd Regulator
Compared to Met SEG work, the 2nd rider is a more active version of the SEG 'Easy Rider', who decides the speed of the convoy.
